On a trip to the Lake District, UK, the Allis’s met Charlie Whinney after seeing an article on his work in a magazine. They loved the fluidity of his designs and the use of natural materials to create surprising sculptural and architectural works. Charlie visited The Bower in the summer of 2019, demonstrating with the Allis’s his steam wood bending techniques with a homemade contraption in their garage. Charlie will return for a week-long residency in the summer of 2020 to create sculptures and seating using local materials for The Bower. Charlie has done commissions in China, Japan, Singapore, France, UK, Ireland, and the US. His studio “exists to explore the relationship between materials, people, and the environment”. In the photo gallery below, you can view some of the ideas Charlie has presented to create using a play one a simple shape during his residence at The Bower in June, 2020.
